The world seems like a bit of a different place since we last posted. We are watching the news with some trepidation...

Tony has had a good season in the workshop. The trug wood he is working with is especially good. He has completely run out of the timber we use for flower baskets (until we mill another tree) so has been experimenting with plywood. We have a few limited edition plywood flower baskets on offer (see our stories).

Kia ora! Kei kōnei tonu mātou...

Just letting you all know that while nothing much has been (or very likely will be) happening on instagram the steamer is on and trugs are still happening in the workshop.

I have taken a on a few extra things this year and so the time I had been putting in to keeping you all up to date has been suctioned off into other endeavours.

We'd still love to hear from you. You can send us messages through instagram, but if you're in a hurry an email or a phone call is best.

(ENG below) E mahana ana, e wera ana ngā rā i tēnei wīki. E kurauri ana ngā puawai o tēnei 'sweet william' ināinanei (kāore au e mōhio ana ki tōna momo) anō nei he whāriki perehunga. Rerehua ana, ka tāpirihia he pikitia ki ngā stories

It's all drama and opulence in the garden this week. This Sweet William is now in full bloom and it looks like the maroon velvet seats in some posh theatre. I'll put a photo in stories.

The warm weather is here. Tony is making a new slasher handle in the workshop this morning being on top of his trug work.

Nau mai te ono o Whitianaunau! We are already in to the sixth month of the year (how did that happen?), the days are decidedly warmer here, the grass is growing and the Christmas orders are starting to roll in. If you are considering a gift trug we recommend ordering early. Shipping get very, very slow in December.

For those of you who haven't seen our stories we are happy to announce that we have a new product on our website. The Gardener’s basket case is a quirky carry-all for all your garden bits and bobs. It is perfect for carrying seed packets and labels, and looking after all those small tools which have a penchant for disappearing in to the undergrowth.

The baskets are made from aspen poplar which is grown and milled locally and are finished with Danish oil. We used recycled dowel.

We hope you like them

It's azalea time of year. The smell of this one (kind of pineappley) wafts all around the garden. The mornings are warm now when we go out to the bus stop at the end of the drive and the world seems to be full of birds. This morning while waiting for the bus we watched a pair of hawks courting, paradise ducks flying over, thrush, sparrows, blackbirds and all the birds coming and going up and down the river (they seem to use it a bit like a road). We are pretty far inland but we still see a lot of herons, gulls and shags coming and going over the river.

Tony is out in the workshop making more 'basket cases'. We're glad you liked them so much. More about them when they go up on our website next week.

(ENG below) Kua āhua roa au e pānui ana i ngā kōrero a @lillajapan mō ngā māra i Tokashi.

Kei te māra o te kāinga e puawai ana ngā tellima me ngā geranium phaeum, e tipu mai ana ngā tō kawe puti o ngā iris me ngā columbine.

A few years ago now I enjoyed reading 'Tokashi Millenium Garden' and ever since Midori Shintani (tag above) has been one of my favorite accounts to follow. In the bok and on her account she talks about the 72 seasons of the Japanese year, each with it's own name and signafying event seen in the forests or the garden.

Several years ago I decided to write down my own observations about to collate in to a similar seasonal calendar specific to where we live. I started out strong but truthfuly I barely write anything down now but I am grateful that I still habitually watch the signs of the seasons.

Here in kotinga we are seeing signs of Raumati hina in the bush - the puawānga anf tataramoa are flowering. In the garden we are enjoying the tellima and geranium phaeum 'moment' with the iris and columbine throwing up their flowering stems. The pīpīwharauroa has been back for several weeks now and we hear it (and the ever present kōtare) out the front on warm afternoons.
